Greta Thunberg .. An inconvenience (and uncooperative crusty) or a modern day prophet
Wouldn't it be nice if we cared for our planet, and cared enough to leave it in a good condition for future generations ?
The Glasgow Climate Change conference, currently planned for November 2020 in Glasgow, was being looked forward to. in order that we could assess what had been achieved in the preceding 12 months.
Yes, we have heard grand Action plans about this and that, and all by 2050, but the Leaders seemed to be either ignoring the emergency ( Donny Trump and Brazil) or kicking it into the long grass.
Delaying any actions so to avoid having to take their citizens with them ( the same citizens that would ultimately dec,ide whether to re-elect them).
Then it all changed.
COVID 19 caused us to stop.
With approximately 75% of the global population on some form of lockdown and approximately 60% of the global workforce not able to do their work ( or only partially), the world really stopped.
No flights ( or only a few ).
A much smaller amount of road traffic.
The arrival of warmer weather in the Northern Hemisphere leading to less heating needs.
Do we now have a situation where the climate is under control ?
Or indeed, is the climate really under our control ?
More fool us if the think we have such powers !!
So let's re-phrase the question,
Are we now damaging our beautiful planet at a more agreeable rate ?
Are we actually very close to our 2050 targets ?
Well life has certainly slowed down (except for the amazing front-line workers)
I have time now to talk to family, friends, neighbours and strangers.
The birds are singing and the bees buzzing.
The hedgerow is brimful of spring life.
The air is clean
Yes, I miss being close to people, having a night out, and wow do I miss a HUG.
But, if we choose to reset post COVID ,what as a world could we do without ?
Do we really need aircraft polluting the skies ?
Do we really need petrol and diesel powered cars ?
Could we have a rapid investment in solar panels, tidal power, and electric recharging points,
We need to think big and we need to ACT now.
We could rent land in Africa ( about the size of Wales) to provide enough fuel for the whole of Europe and Africa.
Our 'price' to pay could be the rental of the land at a European commercial rate, and we could get the fuel to Africa for free,
And this would be cheaper than our current fuel.
Winner Winner.
Think big,
This can be done.
What about my holiday and my car ?
Well, I could decide that being part of the 'less than 5%' of the world that has the luxury of a foreign holiday, is too high a price to pay.
I could also choose to work far nearer to home, and either walk or use a bicycle.
Or is being part of the 30% of the world that can own and run a car too much to give up ?
These are my choices that I have to make.
So today Greta has won, but do we choose to go back to the 'way it was before' or shall we choose the new cleaner way of living.
Its a choice that will affect our children, and our children's children
By the way who used the phrase 'uncooperative crusties' ?
You probably guessed that it is the one and only Boris Johnson
Now wouldn't it be nice if we kept the best of preCOVID and, after we have defeated the horrors of COVID, wouldn't it be nice to add the wonders of the new life that we are currently experiencing.
Love and Peace
